The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) is responsible for generating data and information on climate systems including weather, temperature, rainfall and wind systems in Kenya. They provide meteorological and climatological services to agriculture, forestry, water resources management, civil aviation and the private sector including industry, commerce and public utilities for the better exploitation and utilization of natural resources for national development.

The Climate Information Prize is part of a wide programme called Ideas to Impact, which is funded by the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID), and led by IMC Worldwide, in partnership with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), InnoCentive, Itad, Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP) International and Tremolet Consulting.

Ideas to Impact supports research and development in climate technologies for developing countries. Using five innovation prizes, Ideas to Impact is testing whether prizes can be designed to achieve significant benefits for marginalised and impoverished communities.
